OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/27/2022, Red River Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies shot and killed 69-year-old George Maxie of Coushatta at a church on U.S. Highway 71 north of A.C. Whatley Road. Louisiana State Police were called shortly before 5 p.m. to investigate the shooting.
.
The encounter originated with an earlier incident at a different location. Louisiana State Police said deputies were investigating a complaint involving an allegedly armed individual and another person. Deputies arranged to meet the complainant at the church on U.S. 71. The available public accounts do not describe what allegedly occurred during the earlier incident, what type of weapon was reportedly involved, or what allegations the complainant made against Maxie.
.
While deputies were interviewing the complainant, Maxie arrived at the church and approached the deputies. Louisiana State Police reported only that Maxie was shot “during the course of the interaction.” The initial official account did not state whether Maxie was armed when he arrived, whether deputies saw a weapon, whether Maxie allegedly pointed or fired a weapon, what commands deputies gave him, how many deputies fired, or how many shots were fired.
.
Maxie died at the scene and was pronounced dead by the Red River Parish Coroner. Louisiana State Police took over the investigation, and the Louisiana State Police Crime Laboratory processed the scene.
.
The official Louisiana State Police release identifies the decedent as George Maxie, while some contemporaneous secondary reporting reversed his name and called him “Maxie George.” The official state-police identification is used here.
.
The public record located for this update remains unusually sparse regarding the actual use of deadly force. No later detailed Louisiana State Police reconstruction, body-camera release, prosecutorial decision, civil lawsuit or other reliable public record was located that establishes what Maxie did immediately before deputies shot him. Accordingly, the police allegation concerning the earlier armed-person incident should not be treated as establishing that Maxie was armed or threatening deputies when he was killed.
.
OFFICER BACKGROUND:
.
The Red River Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies who shot Maxie were not identified in the publicly available records located for this update.
