OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/20/2022, Tucson Police Department Officers Angela Gist and Alexander Martin shot and killed 25-year-old Adum Mahamat outside Diamondz Hookah Lounge in the 3700 block of South 16th Avenue near West Ajo Way. Police had been dispatched to the business at approximately 3:30 a.m. after a 911 caller reported a fight involving a person displaying a firearm.

When officers arrived, the people involved in the original reported fight had already left. While officers spoke with employees, they were told that a second fight was occurring inside the lounge. Officers approached the building as multiple patrons began running from the lounge into the parking lot.

Body-worn-camera and surveillance footage subsequently released by Tucson police showed officers encountering Mahamat in the parking lot holding a handgun. Police repeatedly ordered Mahamat to drop the gun. The video shows Mahamat continuing to hold the weapon while moving through the parking lot as officers followed him with their firearms drawn.

Police alleged that Mahamat did not comply with repeated commands to drop the handgun. Officers Angela Gist and Alexander Martin then fired their weapons, striking Mahamat. Police subsequently secured the handgun near where Mahamat fell.

Approximately three minutes elapsed before officers began providing medical aid because police said they first waited for additional officers and secured the scene. Tucson Fire Department personnel transported Mahamat to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Pima Regional Critical Incident Team investigated the shooting. Tucson police later released body-worn-camera footage, surveillance video and other materials documenting the encounter. The department's Critical Incident Review archive identifies the 08/20/2022 incident as a fatal police shooting.

Angela Gist had served with the Tucson Police Department for approximately 15 years when she shot Mahamat.

Alexander Martin had served with the Tucson Police Department for approximately four years when he shot Mahamat.

Gist and Martin were identified as the two officers who fired their weapons during the fatal encounter.
