On 08/19/2022, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Officer Brandon Graham shot 60-year-old Brenda Donahue inside her home in the Raintree neighborhood of south Charlotte while officers were attempting to serve an involuntary commitment order. Donahue survived for six days before dying from her injuries on 08/25/2022.

The encounter began shortly after 5:30 p.m. when three CMPD officers went to Donahue's residence in the 8900 block of St. Croix Lane specifically to serve an involuntary commitment order. A man at the residence opened the door and allowed the officers inside. The commitment order indicates that the police encounter was connected to concerns about Donahue's mental or behavioral condition rather than a criminal arrest warrant.

After entering the residence, officers called out to Donahue. According to CMPD, Donahue responded by firing a gun toward the three officers. Police reported that one bullet struck a female officer in the chest, but her protective vest stopped the round.

Officer Brandon Graham returned fire and struck Donahue. CMPD's internal-affairs annual report confirms that only one officer returned gunfire during the encounter. Officers then provided medical aid and Donahue was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
