On 08/11/2024, at approximately 1:33 a.m., Corpus Christi Police Department officers responded to a reported assault in progress at The Ranch Dance Hall on the 4500 block of Everhart Road. Officers arrived and observed an assault occurring outside the building. As officers intervened, 18-year-old Dwayne Earl Johnson produced a handgun while standing over another person involved in the fight.
One officer fired his duty weapon, striking Johnson. Officers rendered emergency medical aid until paramedics arrived, and Johnson was transported to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries. The officer was not injured and was placed on administrative leave in accordance with department policy.
The Nueces County Medical Examiner later identified the decedent as Dwayne Earl Johnson. The Texas Rangers conducted the independent investigation into the shooting, which is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings in Texas. Public reporting through 2026 identified no criminal charges against the involved officer, no publicly announced disciplinary action, no civil lawsuit or settlement arising from the shooting, and no public release identifying the officer who fired the fatal shots.
