On October 2, 2024, law enforcement officers from the Morrison County Sheriff's Office and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) were conducting a follow-up investigation into the disappearance of a 14-year-old girl from Morrison County. Their investigation led them to a residence in the 1700 block of Casselberry Road in St. Cloud, Minnesota, where they located the missing girl.

The occupant of the home, 53-year-old Scott Carlstrom, was identified as having met the teenager through an online forum. Carlstrom had been communicating with her for several months and had convinced her to leave her home to stay with him, even traveling to Morrison County to pick her up.

While officers were speaking with Carlstrom at the residence, he retreated into a back bedroom. A single gunshot was heard shortly thereafter. The house was evacuated, and the St. Cloud Police Department's SWAT team was called to assist. Upon entry, SWAT members found Carlstrom deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The missing girl was found unharmed and taken into protective custody by Morrison County officials. The investigation into the incident is being handled by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA).
