Phoenix Police were called to the scene of a fatal shooting near 49th Avenue and Thunderbird Road, where they discovered 45-year-old Johnny Grammatico deceased in a U-Haul vehicle. Witnesses identified a silver Nissan Sentra at the scene, which sped away as officers arrived. Police escalated a high-speed chase, reaching over 90 mph, that ended near a business at 99th Avenue and Thunderbird Boulevard in Sun City. After stopping, Alberto Espinoza exited the vehicle with a firearm. When confronted by officers, Espinoza pointed the weapon toward them. One officer fired, and Espinoza simultaneously shot himself. He was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators confirmed that the firearm Espinoza used was tied to the earlier homicide. The investigation is being conducted by the Phoenix Police Department and will be reviewed by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office to determine if department policy was followed.
