On June 27, 2024, at approximately 2:15 p.m., a detective sergeant from the Hillsdale County Sheriff's Office initiated a traffic stop on Beecher Road near Lamb Road in Jefferson Township, Michigan. The vehicle's driver, a 33-year-old male with active warrants, was taken into custody without incident. The passenger, identified as 34-year-old Eric Michael Fiddler, refused to identify himself and became uncooperative. Deputy William Henry Butler Jr., 51, arrived to assist. As deputies attempted to remove Fiddler from the vehicle, he produced a handgun from his waistband and fatally shot Deputy Butler. Fiddler then fled on foot into a nearby wooded area.

At approximately 6:15 p.m., Michigan State Police troopers located Fiddler hiding in a field near the intersection of Culbert Road and Osseo Road South. When ordered to surrender, Fiddler opened fire on the troopers, who returned fire, resulting in his death at the scene.
