On June 24, 2024, at approximately 1:30 p.m., the Taylor County Sheriff's Office responded to a reported robbery at the Iowa State Savings Bank in Lenox, Iowa. Steven Trent Sapp, a 45-year-old male from Hooper, Nebraska, demanded money and fled the scene on a motorcycle. Law enforcement initiated a pursuit, which extended into Adams County.

During the chase, Sapp lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into a farm field. He fled on foot, and as officers closed in, they heard a single gunshot. Officers discovered Sapp deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A forensic autopsy conducted by the Iowa State Medical Examiner's Office confirmed that Sapp died from a single gunshot wound, ruling his death a suicide.
