Officers attempted to arrest 42-year-old Wendell Smith of New Orleans, who fled in a vehicle. Police pursued Smith until Patriot and Mimosa Streets.

During the stop, Smith allegedly engaged in a shootout with police. Officers returned fire, and Smith was struck by at least one gunshot. He was transported to University Medical Center, where he was later pronounced deceased.
