Des Moines Police shot and killed a 70-year-old man inside The Elsie Apartments, a HUD-subsidized senior housing complex, after responding to reports of a man threatening a woman with a gun. Officers arrived at 6:00 a.m. and positioned themselves outside the building’s lobby, observing the man armed with a pistol. As negotiations were initiated, the man allegedly raised the weapon in the officers' direction, prompting them to fire multiple shots, resulting in his death. No injuries to officers or others were reported.
The two officers involved, both hired in 2022, have been placed on paid administrative assignment. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation.
