On April 19, 2024, 47-year-old John H. Cassidy, affectionately known as "Little John," died during an encounter with law enforcement at a gas station on Route 37 near West End Avenue in Toms River, New Jersey. The incident began around 1 p.m. when Island Heights Police Officer Peter Muscarella stopped Cassidy for expired vehicle registration and discovered two outstanding arrest warrants against him. Despite multiple requests, Cassidy refused to exit his vehicle, citing panic and asthma attacks. The situation escalated, leading officers to forcibly remove him from the car. During the arrest, Cassidy experienced a medical episode, became unresponsive, and was later pronounced dead at Community Medical Center at 2:25 p.m.
