OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On November 30, 2024, at approximately 3:25 a.m., officers from the Westbrook Police Department responded to a domestic disturbance at a residence on Arlington Avenue in Westbrook, Maine. The 911 caller reported that her son, Ryan Nichols, aged 37, who had a mental illness, was causing harm. Upon arrival, officers confronted Nichols, who had an active felony warrant for assault. He resisted arrest and fled to a neighboring house. Officers fired less-lethal weapons, but were unsuccessful. Nichols then picked up a metal object and walked toward the officers. Sgt. Brian Grasser and Officer Maxwell Sawyer shot and killed Nichols. Nichols was pronounced dead at the scene. Both officers have been placed on administrative leave, per department protocol. The Maine Attorney General's Office is conducting an investigation into the incident.
