On 11/25/2024, the Westbrook Police Department responded to a domestic disturbance call at a residence on Arlington Avenue. Officers arrived to find Ryan Nichols, 34, reportedly armed inside the home. Police claim Nichols refused to comply with commands to surrender and was holding a firearm.

After an extended standoff, police stated that Nichols aimed the firearm toward officers. Sgt. Brian Grasser and Officer Maxwell Sawyer fired shots, striking Nichols. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The incident is under investigation by the Maine Attorney General's Office to determine whether the officers' use of force was justified.
