On 11/13/2024, undercover Gary Police Department's Investigation Unit conducted an undercover operation in the 3400 block of Maryland Street in response to a series of robberies linked to social media marketplace transactions. Officers posed as buyers to apprehend the suspect.

During the operation, 21-year-old Shahaud Richmond attacked a 32-year veteran officer with a machete-style weapon. Another officer at the scene opened fire, striking Richmond.

Richmond was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The Lake County Sheriff's Department Detective Bureau is investigating the incident.
