On December 18, 2024, Berwyn Police Department officers responded to reports of an armed man in the 1800 block of Home Avenue in Berwyn, Illinois. The man, identified as 24-year-old John R. Lyons, was believed to be involved in a triple homicide earlier that day in Mahomet, Illinois.

Upon arrival, officers observed Lyons, who fled the scene, forcibly entering a nearby residence and fatally shooting two dogs. He then exited into a neighboring yard, where he fired at pursuing officers. Officers opened fire, killing Lyons.

The Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force is investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
