On November 30, 2021, at approximately 11:30 p.m., police responded to the fatal shooting of Ivan Wade Flowers at his home on South Kennard Road in Kennard, Indiana. Officers later located 34-year-old Benjamin Petry, who was identified in connection with the incident, at a Speedway gas station at 1877 North Main Street in Rushville.

Officers gave commands for Petry to surrender, but he allegedly drew a handgun and pointed it at the officers. Officers opened fire, killing Petry. He was pronounced dead at the store by the Rush County Coroner.
