On September 1, 2021, at approximately noon, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police were tracking James Williams, a 33-year-old man wanted in connection with a homicide. Williams also had a felony warrant for escape and weapons offenses.
Officers observed Williams leaving a convenience store near 5501 East 21st Street. Upon seeing police, Williams reportedly returned inside the store. Officers followed and ordered him to show his hands. Williams allegedly raised a gun, pointing it at officers. Two officers opened fire, shooting and killing him.
