On 09/08/2021, an unidentified man died from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound after an approximately four-hour police barricade at an apartment on Creekwood Avenue in Bowling Green. Bowling Green police responded after the owner of the apartment complex reported gunfire during an eviction.

Police stated the property owner was in the process of evicting the tenant when the tenant allegedly fired a shot that traveled through the wall into an adjoining apartment. Reporting did not establish whether anyone was inside the neighboring apartment when the bullet entered it. The property owner was not injured, left the property and called police at approximately 2 p.m.

Police alleged that another gunshot was fired as officers arrived but said the shot was not directed at the officers. Police surrounded the apartment and spent several hours attempting to communicate and negotiate with the man inside.

Joseph David Compton alleged BGPD Officers Kyle Laing and Michael Jonkers shot him in the back while he was driving. During initial federal-court review in August 2021, the court dismissed several claims but permitted Compton an opportunity to amend his complaint to pursue an individual-capacity claim against Jonkers.
