OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 09/08/2021, an unidentified man died from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound after an approximately four-hour police barricade at an apartment on Creekwood Avenue in Bowling Green. Bowling Green police responded after the owner of the apartment complex reported gunfire during an eviction.
.
Police stated the property owner was in the process of evicting the tenant when the tenant allegedly fired a shot that traveled through the wall into an adjoining apartment. Reporting did not establish whether anyone was inside the neighboring apartment when the bullet entered it. The property owner was not injured, left the property and called police at approximately 2 p.m.
.
Police alleged that another gunshot was fired as officers arrived but said the shot was not directed at the officers. Police surrounded the apartment and spent several hours attempting to communicate and negotiate with the man inside.
.
Shortly before 6 p.m., a Critical Response Team entered the apartment and found the man dead from what authorities described as an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The available reporting does not describe Bowling Green officers firing during the encounter.
.
Kentucky State Police's Critical Incident Response Team investigated the death. The original database entry identifies the same outside investigative arrangement and records the encounter as occurring from approximately 2 p.m. until the tactical entry at approximately 6 p.m.
.
The man's identity was not released in the contemporaneous coverage, and a renewed search for later reporting, coroner information, investigative releases and other records did not establish a sufficiently reliable public identification to replace Name Withheld.
.
OFFICER BACKGROUND
The Bowling Green officers and Critical Response Team personnel involved in the barricade and entry have not been publicly identified.
.
A federal civil-rights case filed shortly before this incident documented a separate August 16, 2020 Bowling Green Police Department shooting. Joseph David Compton alleged BGPD Officers Kyle Laing and Michael Jonkers shot him in the back while he was driving. During initial federal-court review in August 2021, the court dismissed several claims but permitted Compton an opportunity to amend his complaint to pursue an individual-capacity claim against Jonkers. These were allegations in civil litigation, not findings that either officer committed misconduct, and neither officer has been connected to the Creekwood Avenue incident.
.
Kentucky State Police's account of the Compton shooting stated that Bowling Green officers were investigating a theft when a driver allegedly drove toward officers and police fired. KSP, rather than BGPD, conducted the outside investigation, demonstrating that KSP was also being used to investigate Bowling Green police critical incidents during this period.
