OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On December 23, 2024, at approximately 11:54 p.m., officers from the London Police Department in Kentucky attempted to execute a search warrant at a residence on Vanzant Road in Laurel County. The warrant was related to an investigation into stolen lawn equipment, specifically a weed eater reportedly taken from the garage of Laurel County Judge/Executive David Westerfield.

According to dispatch audio, officers were directed to 489 Vanzant Road; however, they proceeded to 511 Vanzant Road, the home of 61-year-old Douglas Harless. Upon arrival, officers knocked on the door and Harless opened the door with a gun. Police opened fire, killing him. Police then realized that they were at the wrong address. Their search warrant was for a neighbor instead. London PD abolished bodycams in 2023 and there is no video.
