On October 8, 2021, Officer Dustin Broughton of the Mexico Police Department responded to an unknown incident at 1167 Main Street in Dixfield, Maine, involving 29-year-old Matthew Allen Marston. During the unspecified confrontation, Officer Broughton opened fire and killed Marston. The State Medical Examiner determined that Marston's death resulted from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The narrative of what led to an officer opening fire at the same time as Marston allegedly shot himself was never disclosed by police. The Maine Attorney General's Office investigated the shooting.
