On 10/04/2021, at approximately 3 a.m., the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office received an emergency call from a Shell gas station located at 10305 Miller Dr in Galesburg. The nature of the emergency was not specified in the call. Upon arriving at the scene, a deputy was confronted by R.V. Johnson II, who was armed with a knife. According to reports, Johnson lunged at the deputy multiple times. When Johnson continued to advance, the deputy shot him once, killing him. The incident was captured on bodycam footage, which showed the interaction and the subsequent shooting.
