On May 22, 2021, around 1 p.m., deputies from the Davidson County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of multiple individuals exchanging gunfire near 9051 NC-150 in Linwood, North Carolina. Upon arrival, deputies were directed toward Adam Courtney Hartley, 50.

Deputies tracked Hartley through a wooded area and located him in the backyard of a nearby home. Deputies stated Hartley had a gun and an edged weapon. Hartley allegedly pointed a gun at deputies and fired. Deputies opened fire, killing him.
