OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 05/19/2021, deputies from the Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop a stolen vehicle southbound on Interstate 29 near the Thompson–Reynolds area. The driver, identified as Randy Allen Cole, fled at speeds exceeding 100 mph. Traill County deputies deployed tire deflation devices but the vehicle continued on its front rims into a construction zone just south of Hillsboro. The vehicle crossed the center line and crashed head-on into a northbound semi-truck. Cole was pronounced dead on the scene from injuries sustained in the collision. A female passenger in the vehicle was injured and transported to a hospital. The North Dakota Highway Patrol investigated the crash.
