On January 8, 2025, the Robeson County Sheriff's Office initiated a high-speed pursuit near Pembroke, North Carolina, after attempting to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation. The chase ended when the vehicle crashed into a tree on Moss Neck Road, resulting in the death of passenger Mario M. Hernandez, 38. The driver and two other passengers sustained injuries and were transported to a local hospital. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
