Robert L. Brooks, a 43-year-old Black male, was fatally beaten by multiple correctional officers at Marcy Correctional Facility in Marcy, New York, on 12/09/2024. While handcuffed with his hands behind his back, Brooks was escorted into a medical examination room where officers punched, kicked, and dragged him by his neck. Body-worn camera footage captured the violent assault in detail.
Brooks sustained severe injuries, including facial bruising, a broken nose, neck hemorrhaging, and other blunt force trauma. The Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled his death as asphyxiation due to neck compression. In response, 13 correctional officers and a nurse were suspended without pay, and one officer resigned. The New York State Attorney General’s Office has opened a criminal investigation into the incident.
