OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On September 27, 2021, at approximately 2:00 a.m., Clackamas County Sheriff's deputies attempted to stop 26-year-old Nathan Thomas Honeycutt for driving a Ford Ranger pickup without license plates near SE 145th and King Road in Happy Valley, Oregon. Honeycutt failed to yield and continued driving. Deputies deployed spike strips, deflating three of the vehicle's tires. Despite the damage, Honeycutt ddrspeedsdrove outdrove out up to 50 mph and driving into oncoming traffic.

Deputy Matt Roach performed a Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) maneuver on the compromised vehicle, causing the vehicle to crash into a traffic barrier near SE 145th and Ridgecrest Road. Honeycutt fled on foot but was apprehended by Deputy Roach. During the struggle, Honeycutt claimed to have a gun and refused to show his hands. Deputy Jansen Bento observed a revolver in Honeycutt's possession and, fearing for his safety, fired three shots, striking Honeycutt in the chest. Despite life-saving efforts, Honeycutt was pronounced dead at the scene. The vehicle was later confirmed to be stolen.

The Clackamas County Major Crimes Team, in collaboration with the Clackamas County District Attorney’s Office, conducted an investigation. On October 22, 2021, a grand jury unanimously ruled that Deputy Bento's actions were justified under Oregon law.
