On January 16, 2025, Johnson and Carter County deputies executed a search warrant on Cross Mountain Road in Mountain City. Police alleged that Alexander James Russom fired at them, prompting deputies to open fire and kill him. A Johnson County K9 was also injured during the incident. It is unknown, who in the shootout hit the dog. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation.
