On January 15, 2025, Jackson Paul Jones, 33, was fatally shot by Florence Police Department officers after he threatened to "shoot up" police headquarters. Jones called 911 to announce his intentions and arrived at the department's parking lot, where he fired multiple shots at the building. Officers returned fire, resulting in Jones's death. No officers were injured during the incident. The Lauderdale County Sheriff's Office is investigating the shooting.
