On January 20, 2025, Fort Lauderdale Police Department officers responded to reports of a man brandishing a firearm near the 1300 block of East Sunrise Boulevard. According to police, the 35-year-old man displayed a gun and refused repeated commands to drop the weapon. Officers opened fire, killing him at the scene. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the incident.
