n 07/31/2023, at approximately 5:40 p.m., Brookhaven Police Department officers responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a man armed with a saw blade who was yelling at customers at the Town Brookhaven Shopping Center, 4330 Peachtree Road. Officers located 47-year-old Andrew Wesley Dix near the intersection of Peachtree Road and Town Boulevard. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Dix became angry when officers attempted to speak with him and threw a drink at them. One officer deployed a Taser, but it was ineffective. Police stated that Dix then charged toward the officers while holding the saw blade, and a second officer fired, striking him. Dix was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation conducted the independent investigation.
Dix's family said he had experienced serious mental health problems for years and had repeatedly sought treatment and assistance on his behalf. Family members stated they believed he needed mental health intervention rather than an armed police response and expressed frustration that previous efforts to obtain sustained care had been unsuccessful.
