On January 24, 2025, law enforcement responded to reports of a man, identified as 58-year-old Joel Evan Brousseau, firing a firearm from his home on Owyhee Avenue in Nyssa, Oregon. Upon arrival, officers encountered an active shooter situation, with Brousseau firing multiple rounds at law enforcement using a high-powered semi-automatic rifle. During the ensuing standoff, which lasted approximately eight hours, hundreds of rounds were exchanged. Law enforcement evacuated nearby residents and utilized Oregon State Police SWAT personnel, armored vehicles, and a robot operator to approach the residence. Efforts to enter the home were initially hindered by Brousseau's attempts to barricade doors and windows. Eventually, SWAT used an armored vehicle with a ram to breach the barricades. Brousseau was found deceased inside the home around 11:30 p.m., with early information suggesting he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Malheur County Sheriff's Office and Oregon State Police are handling the case and conducting an internal investigation.
