On 01/25/2025, DeSoto County Sheriff's Office deputies conducted a traffic stop on State Road 72 near Thigpen Road and Addison Avenue. The passenger, identified as 29-year-old Matthew Steven Rollie, was wanted on a child enticement charge out of Georgia and had failed to register as a sexual offender in DeSoto County. During the stop, Rollie allegedly drew a firearm and opened fire, striking one of the deputies multiple times. Deputies opened fire, killing Rollie.
