Mark Christopher Cook Jr., 27, was remanded in Hoonah on misdemeanor charges in early April 2023 while awaiting back surgery. Due to severe back pain, he was transferred to Lemon Creek Correctional Center in Juneau for medical care. Instead of receiving the necessary treatment, Cook was placed in solitary confinement. On April 23, 2023, he was found unresponsive in his cell and later died. Cook, a Tlingit and adopted into the Haida nation, held the name GuudGiwi, Baby Eagle, Stastass clan.
