OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/29/2023, at approximately 7:59 a.m., Elizabeth Police Department officers responded to a 911 call regarding an unwanted individual and domestic disturbance at a residence on Amity Street. Officers arrived within minutes and encountered Estiben Alegria-Hurtado inside the home. According to investigators, Alegria-Hurtado was holding a knife while a struggle was occurring with other people inside the residence. Officer Steven Lazo fired one round, striking Alegria-Hurtado in the chest. Officers rendered medical aid until EMS arrived. Alegria-Hurtado was transported to University Hospital in Newark, where he died on 07/30/2023. A knife was recovered at the scene. The New Jersey Attorney General's Office assumed the investigation, as required by state law for deaths occurring during police encounters.
