Lewey Matoomealook, 37, was taken into custody by the Alaska Department of Corrections and had been incarcerated for 13 days when he was transported to Alaska Regional Hospital in Anchorage on September 22, 2022. He was pronounced dead at the hospital on September 25, 2022. Matoomealook's death marked the 13th in the state's prison system in 2022. The Department of Corrections has not publicly disclosed the cause of death.
