On June 9, 2022, 18-year-old Dezaree Archuleta was found unresponsive in her cell at the El Paso County Jail in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She was pronounced dead in her cell. Archuleta had been incarcerated for 23 days and had expressed suicidal thoughts to medical staff multiple times during her detention. A federal lawsuit filed by her family alleges that the jail’s medical provider, Wellpath, ignored her requests for help, leading to her death.
