OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/28/2023, Miami Beach Police Department officers responded to reports of an armed man forcing two women into a vehicle near Lincoln Road and Jefferson Avenue. Officers located the vehicle and attempted to stop it. According to investigators, 29-year-old Darien Young exited the vehicle holding a handgun while the two women escaped to safety. Police stated that Officer Corey Jackson repeatedly ordered Young to drop the weapon. When Young allegedly pointed the handgun toward officers, Jackson fired, striking him. Officers provided medical aid until Miami Beach Fire Rescue personnel arrived, but Young was pronounced dead at Jackson Memorial Hospital. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigated the shooting.
Young had escaped from a minimum-security transitional housing facility in Dover, New Hampshire, approximately two weeks earlier while serving sentences for nonviolent offenses, including drug and theft-related convictions. Authorities said he traveled to Florida after the escape and was wanted in New Hampshire at the time of the shooting.
The Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office later concluded that Officer Jackson's use of deadly force was legally justified and declined to file criminal charges. The review found that Jackson reasonably believed Young posed an imminent threat.
