OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/28/2023, Burke County Sheriff's Office deputies and emergency medical personnel responded to a residence at 1041 Bailey Road after receiving a report that 60-year-old Freddie Walker was experiencing a mental health crisis. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Walker was agitated when deputies arrived. Authorities said deputies attempted to take him into custody after he allegedly raised a fist toward a paramedic. During the encounter, Deputy Tyler May deployed his Taser multiple times while deputies restrained Walker.
After Walker was handcuffed, deputies observed that he was in medical distress. Emergency personnel began treatment at the scene before transporting him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation conducted an independent investigation, and the findings were submitted to the Augusta Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office for review.
Walker's family disputed the deputies' actions, stating that he was unarmed, suffered from longstanding mental health issues, and needed medical treatment rather than repeated Taser deployments. In 2024, his estate filed a federal wrongful death lawsuit alleging excessive force and inadequate medical care during the encounter.
