OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 09/09/2021, 23-year-old William Escano Yah fatally shot himself as Houston Police Department officers approached to arrest him near Burnett Bayland Park in southwest Houston. He was transported to a hospital and pronounced dead.
.
HPD was seeking Escano Yah in connection with the killings of four members of his family at 7518 Imogene Street. Houston firefighters responding to a house fire on 09/05/2021 found Jairo Escano Martinez, 37; Elvira Del Carmen Yah Aviles, 46; and two children, a 12-year-old girl and 10-year-old boy, dead inside. HPD reported that all four appeared to have been shot. Family members identified the children as Isabel Escano and Jairo Escano Jr.; contemporary news reports gave Isabel's age as 13.
.
Escano Yah was Elvira Yah Aviles' son and Jairo Escano Martinez's stepson. Police said there were no signs of forced entry at the family residence and later identified Escano Yah as the person suspected of killing all four family members.
.
Investigators were also looking for a vehicle missing from the family's home. Surveillance video from a neighboring residence reportedly showed a vehicle matching that description traveling to and from the Imogene Street residence around the period of the killings and fire.
.
At approximately 8:30 a.m. on September 9, officers located Escano Yah inside the family's stolen vehicle in the 6000 block of Alder Drive beside Burnett Bayland Park. As officers approached and gave him verbal commands, police said Escano Yah shot himself in the head.
.
HPD officers did not shoot Escano Yah. Police reported that the fatal gunshot was self-inflicted and that he shot himself while officers were attempting to take him into custody.
.
HPD said investigators did not believe another person participated in the four killings. Escano Yah's death therefore ended the possibility of prosecuting the person police had identified as responsible for the quadruple homicide.
