OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 09/07/2021, a Lufkin Police Department officer shot and killed 52-year-old Anthony Cravo of Cypress during an armed-robbery investigation at a property containing two mobile homes in the 900 block of North Chestnut Street. Police released a portion of the officer's body-camera recording shortly after the shooting, and the Texas Rangers conducted the outside criminal investigation.
.
The encounter began shortly after midnight when officers found a man outside the mobile homes bleeding from a head injury. The man and a woman with him reported that an armed man had taken their car keys, wallet and cellphone and struck the male victim in the head with the butt of a long gun. They initially told police the armed man had fled on foot.
.
The injured man directed an officer to the second mobile home on the property, where police believed witnesses or the armed man might be located. The front door was open but covered by a sheet. The officer approached and knocked on the open doorway with a flashlight.
.
Body-camera footage recorded a person inside saying, “Come in.” The officer instead asked the person to come outside and speak with him. Investigators subsequently determined that the voice inviting the officer inside belonged to one of the victims rather than Cravo.
.
Cravo then emerged through the doorway carrying a rifle. According to Lufkin police, Cravo raised the rifle toward the uniformed officer. The officer immediately fired approximately two rounds, striking Cravo. The released body-camera footage captured the approach, verbal exchange and gunfire.
.
Cravo was transported by ambulance to a helicopter landing site and then flown to an out-of-area hospital, where he died. Police described Cravo as apparently unknown to both the responding officers and the two people involved in the reported robbery. One of those victims had been severely beaten and was also flown to a Houston hospital.
.
The Lufkin Police Department conducted a criminal investigation into the alleged robbery and assault and an internal administrative investigation into whether department policies were followed. The Texas Rangers separately investigated the officer's use of deadly force.
.
Cravo's killing was the first of two fatal police shootings in Lufkin on September 7, 2021. Later that day, Lufkin police and an Angelina County sheriff's deputy shot and killed Richard Dee Woods while attempting to arrest him on a felony warrant at a convenience store. The Texas Rangers investigated both shootings.
.
