On 07/27/2023, at approximately 2:00 p.m., Groves Police Department officers responded to the 2800 block of Main Street after receiving reports that 60-year-old David Wilson Guilbeau was behaving erratically while carrying a handgun. According to investigators, officers encountered Guilbeau outside the residence and repeatedly ordered him to drop the weapon. Police stated that Guilbeau waved or pointed the handgun during the encounter, and officers fired, striking him. Guilbeau was pronounced dead at the scene. The Texas Rangers assumed responsibility for investigating the shooting.
Family members said Guilbeau's behavior was completely out of character and believed he was experiencing a mental health crisis. They described him as a kind, nonviolent man who was well known for helping others and expressed shock that the encounter ended in a fatal shooting. Relatives questioned whether additional efforts could have been made to de-escalate the situation before deadly force was used.
