On 08/16/2022, at approximately 2:30 p.m., Houston Police Department officers attempted to stop a vehicle on the North Freeway near Airtex Drive after determining the vehicle had been reported stolen. The driver continued driving away while police pursued. The pursuit ended after the vehicle came to a stop along the freeway frontage road.
According to Houston police, the driver exited the vehicle holding a handgun. Officers gave verbal commands before gunfire was exchanged. Officers shot the man, who died at the scene. No other civilians were injured during the encounter. The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences was assigned to identify the decedent and determine the official cause and manner of death.
The Houston Police Department Special Investigations Unit, the Internal Affairs Division, and the Harris County District Attorney's Office investigated the fatal shooting under the department's officer-involved shooting protocols. Public reporting available immediately after the incident did not identify the decedent or the officers who fired their weapons.
