On January 31, 2025, Gove County Sheriff's deputies responded to a domestic disturbance at 517 W. 3rd Street in Grainfield, Kansas. Deputies encountered 30-year-old Ty Kaiser in a physical altercation with a 63-year-old male relative. Kaiser struck the man in the face. When deputies attempted to detain Kaiser, he initially complied but then resisted. A Taser was deployed but was ineffective. Kaiser then charged at a deputy and struck him multiple times. The deputy opened fire, striking Kaiser. Kaiser was transported to Gove County Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The deputy and the 63-year-old man sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
