According to investigators, Stockton refused to comply with deputies' commands, and the encounter escalated outside the residence.
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation reported that deputies first attempted to subdue Stockton with pepper spray and a Taser. Police stated that Stockton was armed with a knife during the encounter. Deputies then fired their weapons, striking Stockton. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation into the shooting. In March 2024, McClain County District Attorney Jason Hicks concluded that the deputies' use of deadly force was legally justified under Oklahoma law and declined to file criminal charges.
