OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On January 20, 2025, at approximately 3:15 p.m., U.S. Border Patrol agents conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 91 in Coventry, Vermont, near the Canadian border. The vehicle, a blue 2015 Toyota Prius registered in North Carolina, was occupied by driver Teresa Youngblut, 21, of Washington state, and passenger Felix Bauckholt, a 30-year-old German national.
Agents initiated the stop to conduct an immigration inspection after discovering that Bauckholt appeared to have an expired visa. During the stop, Youngblut allegedly drew a handgun and fired at least two shots at the agents. Bauckholt also attempted to draw a firearm. In response, at least one Border Patrol agent returned fire, striking both occupants.
Bauckholt was pronounced dead at the scene, while Youngblut was transported to a hospital for treatment and later taken into custody. Border Patrol Agent David Maland, 44, was also fatally wounded during the exchange.
Investigations revealed that Youngblut and Bauckholt had been under periodic surveillance since January 14, after hotel staff reported concerns about their behavior and attire, which included all-black tactical gear. Prior to the shooting, the pair had been observed purchasing aluminum foil and wrapping unidentified objects in the vehicle.
The FBI, along with other federal and local agencies, is conducting an ongoing investigation into the incident.
