On February 6, 2025, around 9:20 p.m., a Hernando County Sheriff's deputy conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and South Brooksville Avenue in Brooksville, Florida.
The driver, Michael O'Banner, 62, fled on foot, leading to a brief pursuit.
Upon apprehension near Ellington Avenue, a physical altercation ensued during which O'Banner allegedly attempted to seize the deputy's firearm.
The deputy discharged his weapon, striking O'Banner.
O'Banner was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the incident, and the deputy has been placed on administrative leave per standard protocol.
