On July 6, 2021, around 5 p.m., Wichita police officers responded to a report of a disturbance involving a firearm at a hotel. A man reported being robbed at gunpoint but managed to escape. The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Jaime Chavez, was located and arrested near Maple and Ridge. Another individual, Javan Jermaine Ervin, 37, fled the scene in a white 2003 Dodge Ram. Ervin drove through a red light at the intersection of West Central Avenue and North Ridge Road at high speed, colliding with another vehicle driven by Samantha Russell. Russell, who was eight months pregnant, was killed in the crash. Medical personnel were able to deliver her son, who survived and is healthy.
