On February 12, 2025, at approximately 12:00 a.m., Phoenix Police Department officers were investigating reports of a man forcing a woman into a truck near Interstate 10 and 51st Avenue in Phoenix. The vehicle was tracked to the area near Williams Field and Higley Roads in Gilbert. Upon attempting to stop the truck using a grappler device, an officer-involved shooting occurred. The driver, identified as 41-year-old David Garcia, sustained fatal gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. A 25-year-old female passenger was also found with gunshot injuries and was transported to a hospital in stable but critical condition. The exact sequence of events leading to the shooting, including who fired the shots that injured the woman, remains under investigation. No officers were injured during the incident. Both the Phoenix and Gilbert Police Departments are conducting separate investigations into the matter.
