On February 8, 2025, 46-year-old Rebecca Freeman-Krebs was found unresponsive in her cell at the Clay County Jail in Vermillion, South Dakota. She had been detained on February 5, 2025, on suspicion of domestic assault and was subsequently charged with violating a bond condition. Authorities are awaiting autopsy results to determine the cause of death. Freeman-Krebs was facing Class 1 misdemeanor charges, which could have resulted in up to 30 days in jail and a $2,000 fine.
