In the early hours of February 10, 2025, at approximately 1:36 a.m., an officer from the Algood Police Department attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a silver Dodge Dart for suspected driving under the influence on Highway 111 in Putnam County. The driver, later identified as 29-year-old Tommy Lee Spurlock from Livingston, Tennessee, refused to stop, leading to a pursuit. Deputies from the Putnam County Sheriff's Office joined the chase. During the pursuit, Spurlock reportedly had what appeared to be a firearm and threw items from the vehicle. The chase concluded in a wooded median near mile marker 294 on Interstate 40 West, where, under circumstances still under investigation, the situation escalated, resulting in deputies discharging their firearms. Spurlock was transported to Cookeville Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation into the events leading up to the shooting.
