On the night of February 8, 2025, at approximately 11:30 p.m., deputies from the Orange County Sheriff's Office responded to a reported burglary on Castle Street. The 911 call was made by Loida Zunun, a friend of Luis Lopez, who stated that Lopez had contacted her mother, expressing fear that someone was attempting to break into his residence. Upon arrival, deputies observed an altercation through a window, with Lopez reportedly holding a knife. Despite multiple commands to drop the weapon, Lopez allegedly refused to comply, leading deputies to discharge their firearms, striking him. Lopez was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting an investigation into the incident, after which the Orange County Sheriff's Office will perform its own review. Zunun contends that Lopez was defending himself and questions the justification of the shooting.
